mutual aid
for astrophysics & space sciences
In direct response to the federal funding freeze outlined by OMB Memorandum M-25-13 and any ensuing directives imposed by the current administration which may prove harmful to our space sciences community, the choir collaboration is establishing a mutual aid program to offer financial assistance to those who are negatively impacted. Many of our colleagues in physics, astronomy, and planetary sciences may find themselves without a paycheck due to these orders.
To stand with our community in physics, astronomy, and planetary science currently affected by federal grant funding freezes and cancellations (e.g., the NSF funding freeze), we with support from Black In Astro, the Astro Poverty Survey, and Movement Consulting (linked below) have organized a mutual aid initiative for our colleagues. Please join us in supporting our community by giving aid using the green button below, and please fill out the form linked below in orange to request aid.
Thank you for joining us in solidarity, hope, and building a community of care.

The fund will be collected through a GoFundMe account and dispersed in units of $100 to requesters with no cap on how many units may be requested. In this way, we aim to maintain flexibility in the dispersal of funds while accounting for a wide variety of individual needs both in terms of urgency and magnitude (e.g. rent, groceries, prescriptions).
.Additional info: Funds raised through this mutual aid program will be disbursed bi-weekly (every two weeks). We will first try to meet the requests for aid at their requested amount. Next will we distribute aid as evenly as possible across applications made in each two week window. If more urgent aid is needed please mention that in the application form.
UPDATES: Please see below for a record of aid sent to community members in need.
March 10th, 2025: We have disbursed our first round of aid to meet requests received between February 19th - March 7th. We have given $3,361 to Astronomy and Space Science community members experiencing pay check delays due to the federal funding freezes. These funds are being used to cover a broad range of expenses including transportation costs, childcare, and research-related needs.
